More About andrew murray
South African pastor and author Andrew Murray (1828 1917)was an amazingly prolific writer. Murray began writing on the Christian life for his congregation as an extension of his local pastoral work, but he became internationally known for his books, such as With Christ in the School of Prayer and Abide in Christ, that searched men's hearts and brought them into a deeper relationship with Christ. With intense purpose and zeal for the message of the gospel, Murray wrote numerous books even after his "retirement" at age seventy-eight.
Andrew Murray was the second child of Andrew Murray Sr. (1794–1866), a Dutch Reformed Church missionary sent from Scotland to South Africa. Andrew Murray was born in Graaff Reinet, South Africa.
Andrew was sent to Aberdeen in Scotland for his initial education together with his elder brother, John. Both remained there until they obtained their master's degrees in 1845. From there, they both went to the University of Utrecht where they studied theology. The two brothers became members of Het Réveil, a religious revival movement opposed to the rationalism which was in vogue in the Netherlands at that time. Both brothers were ordained by the Hague Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church on 9 May 1848 and returned to the Cape.
Murray married Emma Rutherford in Cape Town, South Africa, on 2 July 1856. They had eight children together (four boys and four girls).
Religious work in South Africa.
Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860.
In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day.
Andrew Murray was born in 1828 and died in 1917.

A great discipling tool that will chisel pride out of your heart Oct 8, 2005
This book delivers way more than one would expect. First of all it is not that long of a book. But it takes a long time to read because you cannot breeze through it. Written by a South African pastor in the 1800's, this book has a woodenness to the english that slows you down. This is good because the topic is so deep that you want to stop and pray every page or two.
It leveled me to the ground about 12 years ago. It is still at the top of my list.
As a pastor, I have recommended this book to many, many people. It usually changes their lives. The fruit tends to be enduring and deep.
I first encountered it when I was a YWAM student. It was required reading in our discipleship school. I think this book should be read by every Christian. If you don't have a copy, buy an extra one so that you can have a loaner.
Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord... Nov 21, 2003
Anddrew Murray writes with the simplicity and love of a pastor, without soft-soaping or sugar-coating the truth. His abandonment and love for Christ is evident in all of his works and, therefore, qualifies him, in my opinion, to write a book on humility. You can tell he has experienced humility and that it is not just an intellectual excercise.
The one thing I took away from this book is that humility is indeed an experience; you can hear about the need to be humble, read, and even study about it. But unless the Spirit makes humility real personally to the individual, it is possible to become haughty about the need for being humble.
Andrew Murray's works have added so much to my Christian life; I feel closer to G-d because of the things he has written.
must read for every christians Apr 28, 2003
He defines humility in biblical light. So awesome. short reading, but yet, so profound. MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Incredible Book!!! Feb 1, 2003
Andrew Murray seems to capture the essence of what it means to be a Christian, and this book is no different. This a beautiful treatise on the subject of Humility, and Murray offers specific directions for believers, from Scripture, whereby we may be transformed and conformed to the image of Christ. I loved it, and I'm sure you will, too.
Humility - the most neglected trait of Christ-likedness Nov 27, 2002
In this little book of his meditations, Andrew Murray brings out by God's Word how humility is defined, how humility can be attained, and how humility is oh so needed today. After reading it, I received a more clearer understanding scripturally on humility. I thought I had an idea about this subject, but that's all I had -- an idea. This little book spurred me into God's Word to seek out Christ as my Example. I truly believe this book can be a help to anyone who desires to have a closer walk with the Lord, and also has a desire just to be a servant for Him.
