Reviews - What do customers think about Dome Over India?
Symbol of a lost Glory Aug 9, 2007
This an excellent book. Full of interesting points of history.
It has a wonderful historical background to the palace and its design, its themes and how the Palace functions today!
The little details about the Official Barman of the Palace, and its wonderful Cavalry Guards - formerly the Viceregal Guard provide a wide spectrum of information about the Palace and its modern existence.
Although the writing is a little heavy with Indian Nationalism - which is why I have deducted two points from its rating -, this is despite the fact the glorious structure they are writing about was built by the British!
The Palace, both inside and out, looks like it hasnt changed since the British left in 1948. Symbolic of India itself!
As such, in the end you cant help but feel that the rush to get the British out came at the cost of India's prosperity, not that an Indian Nationalist would acknowledge.
