Item description for La Araucana by Alonso de Ercilla y Zuniga...

Reviews - What do customers think about La Araucana?

Only part one of LA ARAUCANA  Aug 17, 2007
Buyer beware: this books contains only part one of LA ARAUCANA, the first 15 cantos published in 1569. Since the work's three parts are commonly referred to with the collective title LA ARAUCANA, and this book only gives us part one, I find the book's presentation to be very misleading. Someone unfamiliar with Ercilla's poem would not realize they are only buying part one. The publisher made no effort to disclose this information; it is only apparent upon consulting the table of contents or flipping to the end of the book. Shame on this publisher, and here's hoping this site changes its listing for this title to reflect this information.

A Treasure Of Spanish Epic Literature  Sep 6, 2000
This book is a real thriller. It is a first person account ( 1540) , in verse of the clash of two brave armies in Chile: the Spanish Conquistadores lead by Valdivia and the araucan indians lead by Caupolican. The narrativa takes you to the battle field that saw these daring armies engage in mortal combat. The strategies displayed by both sides has chilling resemblance, in military maneuvers to the US Civil War battles. The Spanish Armies with support of cavalry and artillery, confronted the Arauco indian with larger numbers. The Arauco Senate composed of 136 indians chiefs stages ardent nationalist debates on strategy and principles of War. Finally, the clashes in hand to hand combat wich often left thousands of casualties in both sides during the constant siege to spanish armies. Dialogs with vibrant passion, daring bravery and sense of honor bring the protagonists back to life. A must read
