Un manual interesante Jun 25, 2006
Interesante libro.
Great introduction to Spanish culture Feb 5, 2006
"Descubrir España y Latinoamérica" by Alberto Ribas Casasayas is a true gem in an educational book market awash with stereotyped approaches to Spain and the Hispanic world. This book and CD are an indispensable cultural primer on Spanish culture, very adequate as a class complement to a grammar textbook. The level is appropriate for lower to upper intermediate level students.
The reason why I like this book the most is because it expresses itself in a moderately informal and accessible way, but it engages with a multiplicity of topics in history, society, and culture that go far beyond the usual commonplaces about the hot Spanish weather, "machismo", flamenco, and how festive and friendly the Spaniards are. Furthermore, Mr. Ribas Casasayas is not afraid to touch issues that surely are polemic in Spain today and give the perspective from both sides of a problem. The author's approach to each subject is sufficient to fuel class discussion, though each chapter is complemented with some short sections that have given me plenty of ideas for in-class debates and assignments for students.
I showed it to a Spanish friend who liked it a lot, noting that it was rigorously up to date. He told me that he had even learned some things he did not know beforehand!
If you are a teacher and you need to give a touch of culture to your Spanish language class, this is definitely your book. The distributor told me that it's used in high schools in France and Italy, but I think that college or continuing education students may take better advantage of it.
