Item description for Icons: De Yturbe Arquitectos by Alberto Blanco, Jose De Yturbe, Pedro Salinas & Igor Moreno...
Jose de Yturbe Bernal, born in 1942, has dug deeply into the roots of traditional Mexican architecture and set new standards in contemporary architectural aesthetics. The results are buildings that integrate their surroundings organically, but by borrowing the strong lines, bold colors and generous use of space from the great predecessors in Mexican architecture, such as Luis Barragan (with whom de Yturbe Bernal studied) and Juan O'Gorman. De Yturbe Bernal founded De Yturbe Architectos in 1971, and since then the firm has completed nearly 200 projects, including private residences, corporate buildings, banks, museums, educational and cultural centers, hotels, tourist developments and golf clubs--in Mexico, the United States, the south of India, Spain, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Argentina. De Yturbe Arquitectos' designs promulgate a characteristic Mexican formal boldness, in which large cylinders and crisp rectangles play with sensuous curves and seemingly infinite fugues. Walls are treated as sculptures and so become canvases wherein, for example, a simple latticework might shape the light of the sun. Often water is put to work, to contrast with these solid surfaces, filling pools and fountains. With an introduction by Jose de Yturbe Bernal, and appreciations by Michael Calderwood, Fernando Cordero, Paul Czitrom and Luis Gordoa among others, this book is an important survey of one of Mexico's foremost contemporary architectural firms.

Jose deYturbe is one of Mexico's great master architects. Perhaps he does not get as much attention because of so much showered on Luis Barragan and Ricardo Legorreta, and his work is in the same vein. Nevertheless, he has his own unique flavor, and if you love the work of the two men above, then by all means this should be part of your library. An older book, "Lifestyles, Nature & Architecture: Valle del Bravo, Mexioo" also has a large selection of his work. If you are not familiar with his designs, visit the deYturbe Arquitectos website for a preview.
