Item description for Japanese for Busy People III by AJALT...

In the ten years since its publication, Japanese for Busy People has won acceptance worldwide as an effective, easy-to-understand textbook, either for classroom use or for independent study. In this new edition, numerous revisions and additions have been made, taking into account the comments and responses of both students and teachers who have been using the course. In Book I, the revisions are directed at making the grammatical explanations easier to understand, while adding further explanations of points that students have difficulty with. Changes have also been made in favor of more natural practice sentences and dialogues. In addition, new appendices list the particles, interrogatives, and sentence patterns in the book, as well as the kanji introduced. More fundamental revisions have been made to Book II, which has been expanded and divided into two volumes, Book II and Book Ill. The changes result in a smoother transition from Book I, make new grammatical elements clearer, and present more natural practice dialogues and exercise sentences.
The Japanese for Busy People Course
This concise course in natural Japanese is ideal for such students as businessmen whose aim is a working knowledge of the spoken language in everyday life. eourvival Japanese for Adults, as it might be called, gets to the heart of the language without recourse to childish or classroom-only Japanese. Book Ill is the final volume in the Japanese for Busy People course and is identical in aim and format to Books I and II. In this volume, particular attention is paid to the different levels of spoken Japanese, from informal to polite conversation. Also included are several reading passages to increase the student's familiarity with the written language and its constructions. As in Book II, kanji are introduced regularly, and by the end of this book students should be familiar with over 250 of the most common characters.

Reviews - What do customers think about Japanese for Busy People III?

Slow and Boring  Apr 15, 2000
This book seems to have a much better reputation than it deserves. It is slow and tedious. It puts far to much emphasis on politeness and superficial exchanges. After finsihing book one you still won't be able to say anything useful. Good if you want to impress a Japanese business associate, lousey if you actually need to survive in Japan.

There are much better books available such as "Shin Nihongo no Kiso" and "Minna na Nihongo". If you do buy it make sure you get the kana version.

A Good Introduction to the Japanese Language  Apr 12, 2000
I started studying Japanese from the age of 14 with 'Japanese for Busy People'. It is a good and most adequate introduction to the language. However, the exercises do not go far enough. For those students wanting to take a more serious and approach, I would recommend 'Shin Nihongo no Kiso' which can be found at most specialty language bookstores. It immerses the student in both the spoken and written forms and is supplemented throughout with extensive exercises that reinforce the vocabulary and grammar while maintaining the methodical and tidy style of 'Japanese for Busy People'.
Very good learning tools. The material is clear and concise with relevant conversation topics. The hiragana, katakana, and kanji excercises are awesome. I have actually used the majority of the vocabulary and sentence patterns in everyday situations in Japan.
