Out of a bet i ended up reading this book one summer ago and have since then read this book twice. It's not a horrible read at all.
Of the 100+ novels of all genre's that i've touched, dogeared, beaten, and spit on over the last year one of the most memorable things I will carry into the next year is of the protaganists encounter with Minty.
The writing itself was on par with what i could read in Reader's Digest but the imaginition that Carter could carry into a novel at here age makes me believe that her karma should make this book a valuable "rookie card" of sorts in the near future.
Well, now off to finish my end of the bet... 2 monthes and 15 days til i get there

This cliche revisitation to Harry Potter made me bleed from my eyes when I read it.
Read it in a day... Oct 23, 2003
... and then reread it. Aimee Carter creates a world that is similar to our own, but with one very important difference - how many of us have the same dream every night, with a mysterious man who seems to know a great deal about our lives and offers us advice? Not many, I'd wager, but such is the case for Zac Lucas, the protagonist of 'Phoenix Ashes' and the following two as-of-yet unpublished novels in the trilogy. We meet Zac at age six - an orphan who is tormented by his bullying cousin, Blake, and ignored by his wealthy uncle Robert, but finds allies in his friend Elizabeth and later his aunt Alexa - not to mention Minty, who appears in his dreams every night. We watch him get older, and eventually spiral into despair when events in his life threaten to overwhelm him. A powerful read, offering up opinions on life, death, faith, love, morality and friendship, as well as being just plain enjoyable and engaging.

Aimee uses great description to create a remarkable story. I loved her book! It is the story about a boy named Zac who is faced with the troubles of growing up. In between his search to find himself and his problems with his cousin and uncle, he discusses his life with Minty, a man who comes in his dreams. It is left up to the reader to decide whether or not Minty is real. This novel is very creative and anyone who remembers what it's like to be a teenager will love it. I can't wait for the next book in the series! What is so amazing, is that Aimee wrote this when she was only 15!
