Item description for Stani Michiels & Arjan van Helmond: Jakarta Megalopolis by Agung Jenong, Gerardo Mosquera & Arjan van Helmond...
Description: Jakarta Megalopolis focuses on two projects in the title city by artist and architect Stani Michiels and artist Arjan van Helmond. Each grapples with Jakartas housing culture, the experience of private as opposed to public space and the consequences of city migration, as well as the citys infrastructure, increasing density, and its coherence--or lack thereof--as a whole. As megalopolises in developing countries undergo explosive growth, their cultural, social, political and economic complexities are developing at unprecedented rates. That phenomenon is drawing more and more attention within the world of architecture and art, and Jakarta Megalopolis offers a case study of its complexities, a cutaway view of this chaotic new world.

Reviews - What do customers think about Stani Michiels & Arjan van Helmond: Jakarta Megalopolis?

I think everyone who knows Jakarta will appreciate this book. I have traveled through that city on many occasions. I used to hate it but now I have moderated my view somewhat and there are even aspects of it that I really love. It's the "big durian". Kind of stinky and offensive at first but once you bite into it... Jakarta Megalopolis has presented some ideas that I have often thought about while stuck in traffic there. My only criticism of the book is that it is too short for such a wild and vast subject.
