Reviews - What do customers think about The Deal?

Terrific Read !!!  Aug 17, 2008
As a native New Yorker in the real estate industry as well as a hard core devourer of mysteries, I can say that this book was a great time. The author's perspective combined with his knowledge of the content allowed me a rare fly on the wall access to some very interesting places. I look forward to more work from this author ..
A real estate  Jul 31, 2008
Drawing upon his extensive knowledge as a real estate executive, the author has written a penetrating novel not only of the wheeling and dealing behind the New York City commercial property market, but of people and how they think, act and grasp greedily and hungrily for money and power. It is the story of Jonah Gray and how he goes about amassing money by making real estate deals, while partying and consuming massive amounts of alcohol (Sapphire and tonic) and white powder.

But all that is merely background to a devious plot, murder and mayhem. And decorating the scene are various Faberge eggs, each more beautiful than the next and valuable beyond calculation. The descriptions of the New York night scene, fancy restaurants and the like are as interesting as the plot itself.

Written in the first person, the story provides a thrill a minute, right up to its conclusion. The novel took five years to complete, and it is well worth the effort. The plot unfolds at a fast and furious pace, keeping the reader entranced from start to finish. Recommended.
Entertaining and Excellent  Jul 27, 2008
Adam Gittlin's The Deal is a highly entertaining and suspenseful novel set in the backdrop of the high paced Manhattan real estate market. The book offers the suspense and occupational detail of a Grisham novel combined with Gittlin's youthful and modern perspective and topped off with shades of noir and moments of Godfather-like street wisdom. I hope to see anti-hero Jonah Grey return in future novels as his depth of character is similar to that of Andrew Vachss' - Burke, Elmore Leonard's - Chilly Palmer and other great noir and suspense writers multi-novel heroes. Excellent job from a young, street-smart author.
Was it the deal of a lifetime?  Jun 9, 2008

Jonah Gray was on the fast track to success. Growing up, his family owned and managed real estate in the Northeast and now he worked for a commercial real estate company and was brokering some of the best deals of his young life. So, when family friend offers him an investment opportunity in Big Apple real estate, it seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass by. Sure he only had three weeks to make the deal of a lifetime, but that's what made the request a challenge. Everything seemed perfectly normal until a series of incidents that led him to dig deeper than he'd ever imagined. Was the family friend on the up and up or was there more involved? And would his life ever be the same when it was all said and done?

I am familiar with commercial real estate and so was interested to see how the author brought this in as a part of the storyline, especially since this is something the author is involved with personally. While there are references to buildings in NYC, it was not heavy on the details, which could be good or bad depending on what you were expecting.

There were times when the chapters lagged and I felt like there were too many details for a scene at a club or restaurant. There was also more foul language than I normally prefer, however I was able to read past that part. Once the main character found a Fabergé Egg in his possession, everything changed and the pace of the story picked up and it kept me engrossed until the very end.

There are many twists and turns that I did not see coming. Who was his father and what had he not told him over the years? And what about his old family friend, Andreu? Was his story about needing to purchase the real estate legitimate? And why the rush? These questions are all answered as Jonah digs deeper and deeper into his family history.

Take a chance on this book, it is a good read and it just might surprise you.
Real estate agent makes a killing  Jun 4, 2008
Reviewed by Nikki Pringle for Reader Views (5/08)

In "The Deal" author Adam Gittlin lures his readers into the fast-paced, high-adrenaline world of commercial real estate with a main character, Jonah Gray, whom you can't help but root for to come out on top in the end. Jonah is still young, but he is already one of the top brokers in one of the most prestigious firms in Manhattan. He seems to have it all; a skyrocketing career, a Park Avenue penthouse, great friends, and all of the money, sex and drugs he wants when he wants them.

When what could be the biggest deal of his career seemingly falls in his lap through his connection with a childhood friend, Jonah and his team get right to work without questioning why such a large deal needs to happen so quickly. They see the dollar signs and the name recognition that closing this deal can bring to each of them individually as well as to their firm and go on the attack to get the buyer what he wants. During the whirlwind three weeks they spend trying to nail things down, Jonah meets Angie, a girl who turns out to be more than he bargained for, and that same night unknowingly comes into possession of an item that someone wants back, no matter the cost.

In between constant calls from Angie, run-ins with the law, guns being pointed in his face and he himself pointing guns at other people, Jonah starts to put together the pieces of the puzzle his life has become and starts trying to figure out who has been setting him up, and for what.

After a slow start, Gittlin gets things moving along quite nicely. He does a great job writing the dialogue between his characters in such a way you can almost hear the conversation playing out as it appears on the pages. Jonah does and says a lot of things that should be out of character for such an upstanding citizen, but they make him all the more realistic. The twists and turns are many, the action is non-stop, and Gittlin does a nice job tying things together.

The ending felt like it came out of nowhere. After Jonah finally figured everything out, he was frantic to take the next step he had mapped out for himself and the ending was written in such a way that you could really feel that frantic pace. Gittlin left things a little vague, but perhaps it was written that way so that there could be more for us, the readers, to learn about Jonah Gray in future novels. I am hopeful that will be the case. Fans of fast-paced suspense and lots of dialogue, especially those that have enjoyed the works of Stephen Frey, will enjoy all "The Deal" has to offer.
