Reviews - What do customers think about The Imitation of Christ?
Real meaning of Christ living in you Mar 28, 2007
This book has been reviewed by many others. I bet very few spiritual seekers are dissatisfied with this book. My contribution to the reviews will be from the perspective of an eastern religion. Its a great relief to know that Christ, who comes to dwell in us and saves us for eternity, will come only after vanquishing evil tendencies and self. It is a relief because too many Christian preachers made Christianity a big business (How can you ever miss a commercial - showing filthy children to be saved, diseased African's receiving grace, Bible's distributed to war-torn regions for peace, advertising obligation of tithe, insulting non-payers, TV Testimonial's of receiving grace after paying money to so and so, labelling every kind of business with Christian something). Today, a casual seeker is bombarded with these advertisements, basically giving the impression that you become saved by simply (a) beliving in Jesus Christ, (b) paying up to them, (c) live the same old wretched life, and (d) preache a,b,&c to others to help them become saved. This is the biggest pyramidal scheme ever hatched. Imitating Christ is none of these. You become generous because you want lose selfishness, not because you are emotional. You cleanse evil tendencies. Then you preach that path which, Jesus Christ himself, and his saints treaded. This is the Imitation of Christ. This is essence of Christianity as presented and practised by Thomas Kempis. I sincerely hope this current degradation and defilement of Christian ideal will be stopped. This book is translated using very lucid language. I recommend "Imitation of Christ" highly.
nourishing Jan 27, 2007
A wonderful book to meditate on and take in slowly. Humility and grace are covered quite well. I understand why this has been an oft-printed book.
uplifting Jan 15, 2007
supposedly ranks second only to the bible in terms of number published. easy to pick up and read anytime, even if for only a few minutes. it's from hundreds of years ago, so it's pretty conservative, traditional reading in contrast to some of today's swinging, feel good concepts.
The book every christian should read. Jan 9, 2007
If there was one book that I could make every christian read other than the Bible (sadly, most christians have not read that one either), it would be The Imitation of Christ, hands down.
There is no other more rewarding read out there. It uplifts, instructs, fortifies and was somewhat of an epiphany for me. No matter how long you've been a christian, or how mature you are, I give this book my highest praise and recommendation.
Incredible Jan 4, 2007
I've only read the first six chapters, but already this book has amazed me. Each small passage contains profound insight into life as well as wise instruction for the Christian's spiritual journey.
In the third passage of chapter 3, the author says, "The more a man is thus concentrated within himself, and the more he has purified his affections, so much the more easily will he understand even the profoundest matters, because he then receives the gift of understanding from above." It seems that this is exactly what has occured in the author's own life because every sentence I've read so far is a revelation.
While the book contains profound wisdom, it is not difficult to read or understand. In fact, the small sections make it easy to read a little at a time. I found this helpful because each concept can be read and then contemplated so that the reader gets the full value of what the author is saying. If you're looking for a book with some substance, you will be very happy with The Imitation of Christ.
