A Less Than Wonderful Scofield Mar 11, 2003
I have used Scofield Bibles for years. My favorite Bible is an Old Scofield in Genuine Morocco leather. I have also used the New Scofield variations in both the King James Version and the NIV. This new adaptation is quite a bit different than any of the previous editions. The graphics are good to excellent and easy to use. The textual commentary seems to lean toward a stricter Calvinism than previous editions, though (this could be my imagination). The print is very good and extremely readable. The in-text maps are above average. There are character studies based on the names of certain Bible personalities that are good the first time around in the Bible, but tend to get redundant. Many of these name studies are also painfully elementary (for instance, consider "Moses: saved from water. The great leader of the Israelites who led them out of slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land.")
Following the lead of the English Standard Version, this Bible comes with a CD in the box for computer use.
The New King James Version is a very desireable translation. Very accurate to the original languages, and a God-send for those who love the KJV (or want a translation from the textus receptus) but want a more understandable rendering of it.
As to the quality, I was very disappointed. I expected better from Oxford. Even though the genuine cowhide is a good leather, the workmanship is less than satisfactory. The whole Bible was asymmetrically bound and came straight from the box with a crack in the binding in the maps section. The back cover stuck out from the pages about 1/4 inch farther than the front cover.
Overall I would say that while the study system is quite good, the craftsmanship of the Bible leaves much to be desired.
